But the ultimate pragmatism is quietly to note that idealism has won, time after time, in the last 100 years.
In spite of a pre-reflective disposition toward dualism, an explicit argument for an agnostic attitude with respect to the ultimate constitution of reality, thus a form of epistemological idealism without any argument for ontological idealism, is also characteristic of John Locke (1632 1704).
However, there are other passages where Nietzsche is not in such a charitable mood and where he presents the ultimate reasons for Plato's strong leanings towards idealism as rooted in weakness and resentment as is the case with all the other idealists in the history of philosophy (e.g. Ecce Homo. 3. KSA 6. 311).
They each maintain a basic presentation of conventional truth in agreement with the epistemological idealism of Yogācāra and the presentation of ultimate truth in agreement with the ontological non-foundationalism of the Madhyamaka.
The idealism of Yogācāra holds the nondual mind as the only ultimate reality and the external world as merely conventional truths.
Is the term "idealism" acceptable for the view that, even if nothing expressible in language has ultimate reality, mental events are still more real than physical events, which do not have even conventional reality?
Thus our experience of the world is shaped to fit a priori forms, and this is where the Kantian version of idealism enters the picture: the world of human experience is not the world of ultimate reality (Kant's unknowable, noumenal world of things-in-themselves); rather, it is a world shaped by our own cognitive structures.
In others, the opposition, while still broadly ontological in character, concerns rather the ultimate nature of reality as a whole, a historically important example being the controversies generated by various forms of idealism.
