After paltry dinners of bland millet meal, they flick on their cellphones through images of Photoshopped cows, fat and udder-deep in bright green grass.
Cows with a deep udder (relative to the hock), large front quarters, and a small angle between udder and abdominal wall were more likely to develop UCD.
Figure 3 illustrates the predicted prevalence of cows with deep udder shape over the course of the lactation.
As shown in figure 4 the occurrence of deep udder shape remained constant for first and second parity cows but decreased for third or higher parity cows during the course of the lactation.
It is known that cows with deep udders have an increased risk of mastitis [ 17] as these udders have an increased tendency to become soiled and hence populated by bacteria.
Therefore the reason for the observed falling prevalence of cows with deep udders over the course of the lactation is likely to be that the farmers are culling the old cows with deep udders.
The same could be the case when explaining the higher prevalence of older cows with deep udders, since they are the ones left in the herd.
A piece of tissue (5 × 5 × 5 cm) was removed from a deeper location of the udder quarter, 7 cm dorsal of the milk cistern, of which a smaller tissue piece (1 × 1 × 0.5 cm) was transferred to a tube containing 5 ml RNAlater® (Applied Biosystems Incorporation, Foster City, USA) and served as original material for all further analyses.

According to our results, IgA is released primarily into milk, not into tissue fluid, which suggests that the synthesis occur close to the epithelium rather than in deeper sub-epithelial tissues of the udder.
