Unmanned combat aerial vehicle

Few are more important than plans for a stealthy unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV).
The question of exactly how autonomous a UCAV should be is a matter of some debate, but most analysts agree that, although take-off, navigation and landing can be handled automatically, the decision to fire weapons should be made by a human, to reduce the risk of "friendly fire".
That infuriated Germany and Italy, which promptly signed an agreement of their own, demanding a slice of any programme to produce Europe's common UCAV.
France and Britain got things going in 2010 when they agreed to work together through BAE and Dassault on a medium-altitude, long-endurance reconnaissance drone and the UCAV.
Intelligent routing software would then enable all the aircraft in the swarm to operate as a flying data network, passing data among themselves as necessary.Another way to reduce the amount of data traffic between operator and UCAV is to make the aircraft more self-reliant.
The UCAV is thus seen as a "sixth generation" aircraft critical to Europe's aerospace industry.Politics, againAs usual, however, political considerations are complicating an already technically demanding programme.

Indeed, today's pilots might, says Mr Warden, turn out to have completely the wrong skills to operate UCAVs.
From simulations, Boeing has worked out that operators should be able to handle four UCAVs efficiently from a single workstation. This month, the X-45A is being moved to Dryden, where initial software tests will begin.
UCAVs are also expected to be up to 75% cheaper to operate and maintain than manned aircraft.
A single operator could control several aircraft at once, and operators working in shifts would enable UCAVs to loiter in a combat area for hours far beyond the operating endurance of individual human pilots—as they wait to strike.
The next wave of UAV development is likely to be so-called uninhabited combat air vehicles (UCAVs).
