The N bound to U7H3 and U4H3 have their resonances at ∼161 ppm, which is consistent with expectations for a UA pair (Supporting Information).
Thus, the 21/62 combination converts a UA pairing to a GC pairing, the 19/64 combination converts an AU pair to a UA pair and the change at position 65 converts a GU wobble pair to a Watson-Crick GC pair.
The deviation could come from additional tertiary interactions between one or more A's in loop 1 and the UA pair in stem 2. For example, an A·A-U base triple with the non-Watson−Crick A in the major groove is possible (78, 79).
