Now I am not one to even highlight books, however in this case I just had to bring pen to paper so that I could remember to address the types of thing that had made it into this book.
On balance, it now seems that most of the firms that applied it became more efficient; but it is also clear that it was hopelessly oversold, and that it is much more use to some types of firm, or business people doing some types of thing, than it is to others.
Even so, it is a mistake, on this view, to postulate two distinct types of thing (the idea of Caesar and the man Caesar) that are composed of two distinct substances (the mental and the physical).
Another reason is that a definition requires a difference that distinguishes what is being defined from other types of thing within the genus ("rationality" for humans, within the genus "animal"), but the categories are the highest kind of things, so there is nothing outside of them that can be used to distinguish them.
Dawkins gives a list of some exemplary memes: 'tunes, ideas, catch-phrases, clothes fashions, ways of making pots or of building arches.' Note that while it is sometimes assumed that all memes are ideas (and vice versa) Dawkins's list includes other types of thing, such as ways of making pots, which are techniques.
I don't really go to those types of thing, so if there was a lot of pot-smoking and stuff, it already would have been like, "Well, this is an unusual night".
