An eight-month outbreak of an uncommon type of E coli food poisoning left 250 people ill and one dead, with cases continuing to emerge until July of this year – but the public has only been told now.
Of the six key pathogens identified, only one, rotavirus, currently has a vaccine available, although vaccines for two of the other pathogens, bacteria known as Shigella and ETEC (a type of E coli), are in the pipeline.
The results reveal that 23% of the products tested contained a type of E coli that can cause renal failure in humans, while 80% of products across seven brands contained antibiotic-resistant E coli.
