This is not a surprising finding as the two items are connected when there is active planning of a suicide attempt, in that experiencing suicidal ideation commonly precedes the act of suicide.
Whereas one to four or six items were actually shown (there were never five targets), the subjects were instructed to respond within the full range between one and six items.
Although in the preliminary criteria four of the six items are required to classify SS, there was no limitation regarding which four items.
