In visits to Unesco's Jakarta office, where disaster warning systems and education piled upon already full plates, I often encountered a scrappy lot of staffers working on tsunami issues — a welcome antidote to the pencil-pushing image of U.N. bureaucrats we're often fed.
Calling for more education in schools, it also cautioned against an over-reliance on technology, as it could take too long for early-warning satellites and seismographs to pinpoint the source of an earthquake or detect signs of a potential tsunami and issue alerts.
During the 20 July 2017 tsunami event, all ICG/NEAMTWS tsunami service providers (TSPs), operating in the Eastern Mediterranean Basin, issued tsunami Watch/Advisory, Ongoing, and End messages to their subscribers and national CPAs.
There was no tsunami alert issued and the city appeared to have been spared major damage.

For the 2011 off the Pacific coast of Tohoku Earthquake and tsunami, JMA issued tsunami warnings/advisories, as it usually does, in a timely manner.
To improve the warning system, JMA will be reviewing its tsunami warning/advisory issuing and cancelling methods, processes, and procedures.
