Parents of children with life-threatening illness or injury may be more likely to consent to participation in clinical trials in the hope of finding a "miracle cure" [ 86].
The sample size for the trial was determined in consideration of finding a significant effect for the primary efficacy endpoint (transfusions after the first 28 days on-study).
