The efficacy of these agents as monotherapies in the treatment of acute mania in randomized controlled trials approximates 50% response and only 25% remission (McElroy and Keck [2000]; Perlis et al.[2006]).[2006]
The estimated mortality reduction in the screening program is similar to the PSE estimates because the long-duration of screening (5 annual or 3 biennial screenings followed by 3 5 years hiatus followed by 5 annual or 3 biennial screenings) in the trial approximated the 21 years of periodic screening.
There was no significant difference in adverse events between higher and lower dose in the dose-comparison trials (approximate risk ratio = 1.23, P = 0.13).

Indeed, why has only one trial approximating to this recipe for PET been published to date (van Tinteren et al, 2002)?
Turner et al. reviewed 14886 Cochrane Database meta-analyses including a total 77237 trials and approximated the empirical distribution of the between-trial variance categorized by type of outcome (mortality, semi-objective and subjective), type of intervention, and field of medicine [ 6].
Furthermore, the dimensions of evidence discussed in this editorial (study design, biological plausibility, reproducibility and generalizability) are difficult to simply measure and their impact on how the findings of an individual trial approximate the 'truth' is hard to quantify (Table 4).
