From Figure 1, the following patterns are apparent: (i) both d̂S and d̂N show smooth trends of fluctuation along the sequence; (ii) d̂S fluctuates more wildly along the sequence than d̂N; and (iii) in some regions, the estimated rate ratio ω̂>1, which could naïvely be interpreted as indicating positive selection.
