Catchments in the eastern part of the island, in particular, were subject to extensive valley floor sedimentation from 1999 onwards and sediment was transported as far as the ocean23 (Supplementary Videos 2, 8 and 9).
Fine sand, silt, and clay are transported as suspended sediment in a water column and settle where the turbulence intensity is weak (Duan et al. 2009, 2011).
These solid-phase materials are transported as suspended sediments into the lake, where they liberate dissolved silica, which can be utilized by diatoms (Figure 6). Modeling effects of bioturbating lotic animals across species and relatively simple environmental conditions (in mesocosms) provided highly significant results (P-range: < 10− 6– < 10− 15) for nine sediment variables describing baseflow and flood-induced sediment transport as well as sediment surface modifications.
A vegetated catchment may decrease sediment yield, sediment erodibility, Hortonian overland flow, aeolian winnowing of fines, the proportion of sediment transported as bedload, and may increase bank stability, infiltration into substrates, and bed roughness.
The silt-sized sediment was transported as primary particles under the different mulch coverage conditions.

Compositional linear process models may be used to describe compositional and/or textural evolution resulting from selective modifications induced by sediment transport, as well as chemical and mechanical weathering.
