It is currently unknown whether such a rapid movement of proteins from synapses to the nucleus may occur by diffusion, facilitated transport, signalling endosomes or whether it requires association with the microtubule network.
In parallel to the changes described above, statistical analysis of the data also reveals that low oxygen leads to a preferential decrease in transcripts for genes encoding for proteins involved in transport, signalling, lipid metabolism, secondary metabolism and redox-regulation (Fig. 3).
It has been proposed that filopodia transport signalling molecules to neighbouring cells (Sanders et al., 2013; Roy et al., 2014), promote adhesion and are therefore important for generation of traction forces (Albuschies and Vogel, 2013; Fierro-González et al., 2013) and serve as a sensing organelle (reviewed in [ Wood and Martin, 2002]).
In comparison to cellular networks, which are mostly implemented by a fixed infrastructure to transport signalling, voice, and data communications, satellite communications have limited dependency on the ground infrastructure, which is related to the management of the satellites or to the deployment of a gateway or 'hub' connected to the internet.
Genes were associated with the following categories: response to stress, response to oxidative stress, apoptosis, immune system, cytoskeleton, proliferation/growth/development, ribosomes/translation, degradation, metabolism, electron transport, transport, signalling, RNA, DNA, and regulation of transcription (Additional File 2).

Transporters are involved in material transport, signaling, and energy input in all living cells.
All remaining MF proteins had domains associated with ion transport, signaling, or protein-protein interactions, and were catalogued as involved in cellular regulation.
