The communist state of Transnistria has its own currency, police, army and border guards, although remains unrecognised by sovereign nations.
Since the early 1990s, with the support of Moscow, a nationalist, pro-Russian separatist movement in Transnistria has been trying to break away from Moldova.
So far, Transnistria has refused to join the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Agreement, signed last year between the EU and Moldova.
Since then, Transnistria has followed its own Soviet-style path, leaving the enclave adrift from almost all of the rest of the world and firmly under the wing of the Russians, who maintain a military base here.
