From 2011 2015, the Australian Government funded a transdisciplinary research program, the Landscapes and Policy Hub, to meet this need.
On the strength of these realizations, a national transdisciplinary research program was deemed necessary and this is how Ville 10D – Ville d'Idées came to be in 2013.
Additionally, it has formed part of the EPA Office of Research and Development ORD Nanomaterials Research Strategygy and is aligned with recent efforts within EPA to have a more "integrated, transdisciplinary" research program in the ORD.
The division is committed to a transdisciplinary research approach, combining researchers from diverse fields (Psychology, Sociology, Medicine, Economics) and partners from the field.
Other research programs, often of a transdisciplinary nature, came to occupy a prominent position as intellectual points of reference without finding a secure institutional basis either in an increasingly authoritarian European setting, or in the discipline-based American academic landscape.
This type of research would not be possible without academic institutions creating centers of excellence, institutes, or research groups that bring together individuals with the competencies to conduct transdisciplinary research and innovative funding strategies to initiate and maintain research programs over time.
Our recommendations build on these successes by focusing on creating enabling environments for One Health and transdisciplinary research, training transmitters using real-world-oriented educational programs that break down silos through collaboration across disciplines and nonacademic stakeholders, and the development of novel funding structures for One Health transdisciplinary research.
The program emphasizes inter-institutional and transdisciplinary research interactions and collaborations, with publications and ongoing clinical trials as evidence of success.
Growing interest in transdisciplinary research and training allows institutions to "shine" when they adopt programs that address these complex issues, but I do not see a strong system of rewards either for institutions or academics who work in these spaces, as of yet.
Transdisciplinary research projects require collaboration and coordination between researchers from different disciplinary backgrounds.
