The motion of the dots in the RDK was determined as though the trajectory of each dot had been first calculated in the continuous-time domain.
During the scrambled OFF period, dots and their movement vectors were generated as during the coherent ON periods except that each dot trajectory was rotated by a random angle around the pattern center before execution.
The figure had no discernable body structure that could have helped to reveal facing direction, as on each trial the positions of the dots were both horizontally scrambled (i.e., their locations were randomly reassigned, keeping the dot trajectory in the same vertical position but varying its position in the horizontal plane) and temporally scrambled (i.e., presented out-of-phase).
The change in treatment efficacy also leads to a decrease in F R because drug-resistant strains are harder to generate and are less likely to be transmitted under treatment with HAART than under monotherapy with AZT (dotted trajectory, Figure 2A).
Although it is not possible to reconstruct form cues from these scrambled displays, viewers can reliably extract information about the direction an animal is facing, provided the dot trajectories are presented in their normal (upright) orientation (e.g., Troje & Westhoff, 2006).
Watamaniuk [31] also argues against a similar explanation for performance in a task where part of a dot's trajectory is occluded.
