However, there are marked differences in training occupations, as shown in the example for the apprenticeship "cook".
Around 230 training occupations exist and, apart from some general skills, each provides predominantly occupation-specific competences and skills.

In other words, the vast majority of small internationalized non-training firms could potentially offer apprenticeships in an official training occupation, but predominantly refrains from doing so – and to a larger extent than domestic firms – because they are too specialized and (possibly as a consequence thereof) provide internal training to employees without a vocational degree.
However, more than 80% of non-training firms state they are aware of a potentially suitable training occupation, indicating that many internationalized firms currently not offering apprenticeships could potentially provide training places.
Training takes 2.5 3.5 years depending on the training occupation.
Not surprisingly, 85% of workers remaining within their training occupation use many or very many of the skills they learned through apprenticeship.

Occupational change is measured as a change from an IVET training occupation to a work occupation on the 2-digit level of occupation codes constructed by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office (39 categories).
