Cohort 1 (n = 8) included: 2× Core Medical trainees (CMT), 2× Emergency Medicine (EM) trainees & 3× foundation trainees (FT); with prior ICM experience: 3× none, 5× < 6 months.
Data on trainee doctors' (Foundation Year 2) workplace information seeking practice was collected by questionnaire in 2011 (n = 260).
Our target population was all postgraduate trainee doctors (foundation and specialist trainees) practicing in the UK at the time of the survey.
It assesses the competencies of international medical graduates to practise medicine safely in UK hospitals, and the standard is set at the level of what would be expected of a trainee completing foundation year 1.

Questionnaires were completed by 190 trainees: 77 foundation, 51 core and 59 specialty trainees.

In the main phase, (recruited mainly between December 2010 and April 2011), the invitation to participate was extended to all foundation trainee doctors in the Wales Deanery in both Foundation years 1 and 2 (F1 and F2).
We had relatively low numbers of male, non-white and foundation trainee participants so our findings are most relevant to female, white and specialty trainee doctors.

The doctor's pay level was calculated at a Foundation Trainee 2 level (as no information was available specifically for a SHO or ST1/2 doctor level), specialist registrar and surgical consultant level.
