Measured on the retail prices index (RPI), which is still used to set some train ticket prices and pension payments, and is calculated to include housing costs, inflation appeared stronger, at 1.1%.
There will be a return to weekly bin collections, twice-daily postal services, comprehensible train ticket pricing and all the other things that 100% of British people wanted to keep but were somehow abolished anyway.
Meanwhile, the government is under growing grassroots attack for allowing train ticket prices to rise sharply just when it should be trying to encourage people to switch from aviation, and for encouraging the growth of nearly all Britain's main airports.
Government index-linked savings products and some train ticket prices rise in line with RPI.
Britain has opted for an airline-style pricing structure, which means it has the widest range of train ticket prices in the world.
Transport Secretary Chris Grayling said: "Thanks to action by the government on train ticket prices, wages are growing faster than regulated fares". Northern Rail, which runs commuter services into Manchester, confirmed it had not increased annual season ticket fares but said other prices had risen.
"Wages are growing faster than train ticket prices thanks to action by the government, and our commitment to cap regulated rail fares in line with inflation will save annual season ticket holders £425 on average in the five years to 2020," said Rail Minister Paul Maynard.
To recoup initial capital costs - construction and train purchases - ticket prices would have to be set so high that few people would choose rail.
"I want a refund of my original ticket plus £8.40 booking fee, the train fare and the ticket price difference which amounts to £298".
