"We cannot let the Mediterranean fall into the hands of human traffickers," Mr. Besson said.
"They're easy prey for the bands of human traffickers," Mr. Valdés said.
"Before getting here, they are at the mercy of human traffickers," he said.
Worldwide, as many as four million people a year fall into the hands of human traffickers, officials said.
In Morocco, unable to go further, they often end up in a life of begging and prostitution or, worse, become the victims of human traffickers.
"I spoke to my friend about the trip, how dangerous it is and how difficult, in the custody of human traffickers," he said.
"A lot of drug dealers are Tunisian; many smugglers of goods between Turkey and Greece are Tunisian; a lot of human traffickers in Belgrade are Tunisian.
