Ultimately, VZ is a balancing act regarding road safety – the balance between safety and mobility, system designers and road users, traffic design and enforcement, and traditional engineering and public health.
Housing density, immigrant communities without cars and poor traffic design may all contribute to the problem.
What we need instead of rental bicycles is for our cities to paint bicycle lanes on more roads, close off important arteries to motorized traffic, design dedicated bicycle routes and traffic patterns, and educate drivers, including city bus drivers, to look out for cyclists before pulling to the curb or making right turns.
