The hearing next week may highlight the growing internal dissension between officials who approve drugs and those who track the safety of drugs after they have been approval.
This chapter tracks the safety system from its building stage through factory acceptance testing, delivery, and installation, and into final testing for handover to the operating team.
Speaking at the hearing, David Graham of FDA's Office of Surveillance and Epidemiology, which tracks the safety of drugs, estimated that Avandia has so far caused serious cardiac problems, including deaths, in 66,000 to 200,000 people.
The Sentinel Initiative was launched by the FDA in 2008, to develop and implement a proactive system to track the safety of drugs, biologics, and medical devices once they reach the market.
"That shook the confidence of some people around here," said Carlos Tejada, a Journal reporter who is researching and tracking the company's safety efforts on behalf of the staff.
When tracking the adverse events and other safety concerns associated with a biosimilar or biologic, it is of utmost importance that the appropriate drug is identified.
"There are two tracks — the safety track, which looks at the company's aging management plan for the plant, and the environmental track," Mr. Sheehan said.
At the end of lap 22, almost immediately after Alonso complained of debris on the track, the safety car was deployed.
