A priori there is no reason why track correction and delineation of behavioral mode must occur in the same step.

Rather, at polar latitudes, we stick to the SH along-track correction and implement an additional empirical correction based on singular spectral analysis (SSA).
This additional SSA along-track correction is applied to all selected data in the high-latitude regions (but not at the mid-latitude regions).
This along-track correction is an important step (e.g., Maus et al., 2006) because the external field perturbations that contain relatively long wavelengths along a satellite track (during magnetically quiet times) change from one orbit to the next.
