For colonial Colombia, Mompós was a key trading town, linking Colombia's coast with the Andes.
The exposed, sloping site, restricted by coal mining in the northwest and fireclay working in the southeast, made necessary high-density housing, unusual in a new town, linked by walkways to a hilltop multistoried town centre.
"Jijiga has become a boom town linked to the livestock system – milk processing, tanning, barbers, truck repairs, hotels – a whole gamut of businesses is linked to livestock," says Scoones.
On the Obersalzberg, 1,640 feet (500 metres) above the town (linked by a cable railway), were the chalets of Adolf Hitler, Hermann Göring, Martin Bormann, and other Nazi leaders, with air-raid shelters, barracks, and various installations.
The new town – linked to central London by high-speed trains taking 18 minutes – has been mooted for more than a decade, but just 65 of the planned 15,000 homes have been built.
Alternatively, hop on the catamaran from Hvar to Brac (45 mins, £4) and head to Bol, the island's most picturesque town, linked to Croatia's most photographed beach - Zlatni Rat - by a mile-long paved walkway through woodland.
Right now, says astronomer Marc Claussen of the NRAO, a collaborator on the project, "in terms of the combination of sensitivity and [angular] resolution, the Pie Town link is unsurpassed".
The A577 road passes though the town linking Runcorn to the south, via the Silver Jubilee Bridge, with the M62 motorway, some 2.5 mile to the north.
The A2220 follows the former route of the A264 through the town, linking the A23 directly to the A264 at Copthorne, from where it then runs to East Grinstead.
