Since 1990, General Mohamed "Toufik" Mediene has headed the country's intelligence directorate, an agency that combines the functions of internal security and counterespionage.
There appears to be a struggle under way between the president's inner circle, dubbed the "Bouteflika clan", and an even more closeted faction around General Toufik Mediene, the chief of Algeria's main intelligence service, the Département du Renseignment et de la Sécurité (DRS).

The defendant, identified only as Toufik M in line with German privacy rules, is accused of being part of a group of 15-20 men who surrounded the woman and groped her.

Spiegel TV, which made the documentary, said Toufik M moved to Düsseldorf two years ago after living in Milan, Italy, for many years, and had applied for asylum in Germany.
In the AG's official "opinion", Toufik Lounes does have the right to remain in the UK even though his wife, Perla Nerea García Ormazábal, became a British citizen in 2010 – a change in status that it had been claimed meant she lost the right she had previously enjoyed to bring her family to the UK.
"We want to show the world that we can take care of our country, and we are doing it without the government or police," said Khalid Toufik, 40, a dentist.
The case of García Ormazábal and her husband, Toufik Lounes, was referred to the European court by the high court in London last year after the Home Office rejected an application by the Algerian for permanent residency in the UK.
