It is to simplify the analysis and the presentation that we fixed the number of topics T and the maximum number of topics assigned to agents at setup (lambda _T), and varied the number of agents N to analyze, at least partially, how larger populations affect the results [see Table 1 (Network sizes)].
In particular, KD necessarily starts very low at the beginning of a simulation because in our settings the number of topics assigned to agents at start-up is limited and the total amount of skill is bounded (i.e., in these simulations, on average, agents at start-up have 5% of the total number of topics T).
This is done through a structured conversation system that eliminates uncertainty regarding the social dynamic by creating structure through the use of conversation topics assigned to each table.
