The resulting book, which was short-listed for last year's Booker Prize in Britain, lacks the fierce originality of Mr. Mitchell's debut novel, "Ghostwritten" (2000), and despite bravura moments it tends to feel like a messy hodgepodge of ideas, experimental dream sequences and leaden leitmotifs: a story at once overly thought out and too haphazardly assembled.
