Participants completed SNARC and SMARC tasks, each of which had explicit (responded to number magnitude or pitch height) and implicit (responded to number parity or tone timbre) conditions.

We randomly selected 15 subjects from the Face+Voice and Face+Complex Tone conditions.

The stimuli included a continuous tone presented together with a higher-frequency noise burst more than one octave away (Fig. 1a), a discontinuous tone with spectrally overlapping noise ("illusory continuity", Fig. 1b), and two matched discontinuous tone conditions (Fig. 1c, d).

We observed a statistically significant main effect of tone (F1 1, 29)  = 4.79, p <.05, F2 1, 29)  = 7.34, p <.005) indicating more facilitation for the falling than the high tone conditions.
