Theresa and Michael Cedillo filed a vaccine injury claim on behalf of their daughter on December 9 , 1998for encephalopathy, but on January 14 , 2002 changed their petition to a causation-in-fact claim, meaning they were arguing that Michelle developed autism as a result of the combined effects of thimerosal and the MMR vaccine.
Significantly, the study itself does not claim to prove a causation – leaving open the possibility to discuss the pink elephant that lurks in the room behind all social discussions of problem drinking: the prevalent, if sometimes well-camouflaged, existence of actual alcoholics.

Since emergent features have not only same-level effects, but also effects in lower levels, some speak of the view's commitment to "downward causation" (a phrase originating in Campbell 1974).
This leads to a semantics for causation.
Evidence based practice requires systematic critique of evidence, and our review is novel for applying this method to a list of causation.
