The year's Weill celebrations, at the Brooklyn Academy and elsewhere, might wish to take their theme from the show title "Happy End".
Surely no one there had read the title "Happy Days" and thought they'd be seeing the wholesome 1950s adventures of Richie, Potsie, Ralph Malph and the Fonz (although there is a musical version of that old television series making the rounds of regional theaters).
The late Laurie Colwin, still sorely missed, published a novel whose ironic title, Happy All the Time, simply begged the question; Tolstoy, you may recall, declared at the beginning of Anna Karenina: "All happy families are alike; each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way".
Title: Happy Father's Day.
