The timescale for a clay particle of size b~μm to diffuse 1 mm in 100 cSt silicone oil is roughly t~103 days, and therefore hydrodynamic flow, sedimentation or electric forces are required to transport clay particles to the drop surface at the timescales reported above.
Additional structural metrics, all of which showed fully convergent behavior on this timescale, are reported in Table 2. Helical metrics include the mean total helicity (Nhelix), mean 310 helicity (N310), mean number of helical segments (Nseg), and mean longest contiguous helical segment (Ncont).
Nevertheless, the independent coding model accurately reproduces the theta timescale activity reported by Maurer et al. (2012).
Kinetic analysis showed concordance between dissociation of the oligomers and appearance of the 'B' form, which furthermore occurred on a timescale previously reported for accumulation of ADP ribosylated BiP (Laitusis et al., 1999) or AMPylated BiP (Ham et al., 2014) in cycloheximide-treated cells.

These abstractions stow away the fact that, above lower boundaries that reflect fairly well understood physical constraints, observed and reported timescales are often not intrinsic to the biological system; rather, in most cases they reflect conditions that are imposed by the observer through the measuring procedure.
This would have had the advantage that experiments could have been extended over much greater timescales than those reported here.
The long-timescale MD simulations reported here support the notion of a simple and evolutionarily conserved structural mechanism controls homo- and heterodimerization of Her2, and thereby Her2 activation.
However, it differs from studies done on a macroevolutionary timescale, which have consistently reported that accelerated evolutionary rates tend to happen at the periphery of the protein interaction network, likely due to the lower functional constraints for the peripheral proteins (Jeong et al. 2001; Fraser et al. 2002).
We can't quite compete with that timescale, but by reporting in the next few months we hope to show how a national newspaper and a leading research university can contribute in a timely fashion to public and political debate.
