Although the Lacey Act appears to be reducing U.S. imports of problematic timber, Prestemon notes that doesn't mean the illegal logging problem is solved, because shady exporters may be taking their products to other nations with laxer regulation.
As The Conversation notes, timber logging in lowland rainforest areas on the island could potentially disturb the big-eared bat's habitat, if the population is relatively low.
"We have some oil and gas royalties, but we don't have a big exposure to commodities or timber," Mr. Bedford noted.
"There are 10,000 people on the waiting list for Timbers season tickets," Paulson notes.
While new trees were planted over about half of the deforested area to help sustain the timber trade, Professor Balzter noted that "clear-cutting far exceeded replanting of coniferous forest".
But there, they noted, the proposed timber sales that may be affected have been blocked for now by a separate court injunction.
Its middle section enters tropical rain forest and is the traditional boundary between the Anyi (Agni) and Baule (Baoule) peoples, and its lower course passes through a region noted for its timber (sipo and mahogany), pineapples, coffee, cocoa, and bananas.
