The word "thumb" is correct and usable in written English
For example, you can use it to describe the digit on the hand, e.g. "She extended her thumb" or to describe a measure of length, e.g. "The distance was two thumbs wide". Additionally, it can be used figuratively in phrases such as "He gave it the thumbs up" or "She gave it the thumbs down".
