I had never heard of SAMP (all I could think of was grits), but loved seeing MUGGLE, YOWZAH and the three theme entries making their debuts today.
Certainly on Tuesday, the way the men skittered about to serve their women in the three Theme duets had an element (not unwelcome) of enjoyable comedy.
Anyway, there was a time when having three theme entries in a puzzle was considered plenty, but there has been a more recent trend toward cramming the grid as full of as much theme material as possible.
Meanwhile, however, I will say that I appreciated the twist of finding the ROLE REVERSAL, or "ELOR," in the middle of each of the three theme entries; a little extra "something" is what distinguishes this from a Monday puzzle.
In addition to the three theme entries, he has included a payoff at 37 Down that helped me figure out where he was going (thank you, Mr. Lewis!) Now I don't feel like such a 5 Down.
The three theme entries are set a-twirl in his grid, and while it was a bit disappointing to see so few fresh words or phrases in his puzzle, I still really liked WHIRLING DERVISH and REVOLVING DOOR.
