Social and economic adversity ranged from 0 to 3. For the multivariate analyses they were coded as 0 = one adversity or none or 1 = two or three adversities.
Therefore, analyses were rerun with three reduced formulations of social adversity, excluding one of the three adversities from the adversity index in each analysis.
The adversity measures at age 16 and 21 comprised only three adversities each and the estimated contribution of social adversity could therefore be particularly sensitive to the presence of some particular adversity.

However, for girls there were increased depressive symptoms at age 14 for all three adversity subtypes.
The three adversity measures were significantly, but weakly, associated with each other, with correlations ranging from r = 0.05 (p = 0.03) for the association between the event index and sexual abuse to r = 0.28 (p < 0.001) for the association between the overall stress rating and the event index.
This study examined racial/ethnic differences in nine adversities among children (from birth to age 17 years) in the National Survey of Child Health (2011 2012) and determined how differences vary by immigration history and income (N=84,837).
Of them 3677 (18% of all) endured three to six adversities.
The adversity predictor variable was inputted as all four adversity classes in the order described above.
We profiled and related the level of depressive symptoms at 14 and 17 years by all four adversity classes for the early and later childhood time periods.
Four adversity indicators (acute disturbances, chronic social difficulties, parental and sibling medical illnesses) showed negligible model contribution and were considered as inactive covariates.
However, by 17 years of age, this effect had diluted: depressive symptoms did not significantly differ between any of the four adversity classes.
