"We feel raloxifene is the winner of this trial," said Dr. D. Lawrence Wickerham, associate chairman of the National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project, which coordinated the experiment.
"There is no question that race is the 800-pound gorilla in this trial," said Ed Shohat, a Miami lawyer who is also a member of the Miami-Dade County Community Relations Board.
"I am fascinated by the train wreck that is this trial," said Lisa Noller, a former federal prosecutor in Chicago who now does criminal defense work.
"Neither us nor President Morsi acknowledges the legitimacy of this trial," said Amr Darrag, a cabinet minister during Morsi's year in office, speaking on behalf of the Muslim Brotherhood's political wing, the Freedom and Justice party.
"The fact that he does not want to take part does not change the historic nature of this trial," said Reed Brody, counsel with Human Rights Watch, which has been assisting Habré's victims' groups since 1999.
"We have the best criminal justice system in the world, and we should not run away from the logistical challenges posed by this trial," said Mr. Kelley, now in private practice in New York.
"The ethics of the whole of the British press are again in the spotlight" with this trial, said Brian Cathcart, a former newspaper deputy editor and director of Hacked Off, an organization campaigning for media reform and tighter regulation.
Mr. Chirac "will be present if you require it," and had never tried to "escape his responsibilities" or "delay the outcome of this trial," said Jean Veil, one of Mr. Chirac's lawyers.
"I oppose this trial," said one of the board members.
