Seventeen muscles attach to the scapula; therefore, this bone is usually resistant to fractures [34].
This arrangement frees the scapula from any bone attachment to the skeleton.
This is because the scapula is not directly connected to the axial skeleton and is also a highly conservative bone.
While the antebrachium also grew more than the scapula in this study, in both previous studies that included the scapula [ 29, 30], the scapula grew more than any other segment (Table 4).
The extent of calcification of the scapular spine was also measured, and it was found that there was no significant difference between the Myf5 nlacZ/nlacZ Myod −/− mutants and controls in the amount of bone in this region of the scapula (not shown).
