The black-and-white photos of Mr. Ettlinger in this post were taken for a 1946 report on the unit's work in the salt mines, and the painting he's holding — a self-portrait, circa 1650, by Rembrandt van Rijn — was one of several things specially unpacked for the report's photographer.
