In some universities, a doctoral candidate who has finished his or her research but not yet finished the thesis is granted a "continuation period" at a reduced fee - a sort of academic limbo with which immigration officers may not be familiar.
Even if this thesis is granted, however, it is a general feature of intentional states that their objects might or might not exist.
Most postdocs I know agree that, in terms of lack of pressure, they are at the best stage of their academic careers, with no thesis or grant deadlines.

Note that irrespective of the equal wrongness thesis, one can grant that factors unrelated to the level of harm to the being, such as the mode of agency, defeaters, the number of people affected, and special relationships, do make a difference to the degree to which killing is wrong.
So, in the early-career stages, it is sensible to have one conventional project where you work hard to get the results you need for your thesis, postdoc, or grant while spending some of your time on an ambitious, high-risk project.
