Among the 21 GO terms related to Biological Processes (BP), some were consistent with responses to water/osmotic stress; these included "response to water deprivation" (GO 0009414), "response to water stimulus" (GO 0009415) and "response to stress" (GO 0006950).
These included response to biotic stimulus (38 vs. 21 expected; p < 0.001), cell adhesion (up-regulated,12; expected, 5; p < 0.05) and cell cell signaling (up-regulated, 18; expected, 9; p = 0.001).
These included responses to oxidative stress, metals (Fe, Zn, Cd), wounding, salinity and drought, and also signaling processes involved in the stress response such as salicylic acid and trehalose.
The major processes identified by these genes include response to stimulus, metabolism, and transport.
Among GO terms highly enriched in these lists of genes include response to abiotic stimulus, response to water deprivation, and response to ABA stimulus (Table 2).
These over-representing GO categories include response to hormone stimulus, regulation of biosynthetic processes and regulation of transcription.
These responses included response to stress, cell cell signaling, and cell adhesion.
These terms included response to stimulus, signal transduction, extracellular region, and ion transport.
These categories included response to chitin (P < 2 × 10-5) on chromosome 1 and cell-adhesion (P < 1.3 × 10-5) on chromosome 2 (Additional file 6: Table S4).
