Patients with chronic hypertension or chronic alcoholism, late initiation of antibacterial therapy, consciousness disorders, abnormal features at chest auscultation, oligoanuria, jaundice, hyperamylasemia, or high aspartate aminotransferase levels may benefit from early intensive and specific management.
The project was started as an exercise in drama therapy and consciousness-raising by Charlotte Eagar, a former foreign correspondent, her husband, William Stirling, and Georgina Paget, a film producer.

Eleven candidate items were evaluated; heart rate, systolic blood pressure, capillary refill time (CRT), pulses, bolus fluid administration, respiratory rate, respiratory effort, trans-cutaneous oxygen saturation, oxygen therapy, level of consciousness and temperature.

Over the course of a campaign that was part therapy session, part consciousness-raising seminar, a few of the principal players took on meanings much, much larger than themselves.
The most frequently measured items were heart rate, respiratory rate respiratory effort, oxygen therapy and level of consciousness (Table 2).
Indication bias was clearly present in this cohort: patients with a low quality score were more likely to require oxygen therapy and have impaired consciousness and less likely to be independent before stroke than patients in whom a high quality score was achieved.
