Nutting et al. [ 52] performed a theoretical trial in 10 patients and compared different IMRT treatment techniques among each other and to conventional 3D-CRT.
In addition, the Duval and Tweedie nonparametric 'trim and fill' method of accounting for publication bias was performed to formalise the use of funnel plots and adjust the meta-analysis by incorporating the theoretical missing trials (Sutton et al, 2000).

Following Zwarenstein et al.'s [ 23] theoretical continuum of evaluation trials, on which rather "experimental", explanatory efficacy-oriented trials form the one end, and naturalistic, pragmatic effectiveness-oriented trials form the other end, this study tends towards the latter, pragmatic end.
