"The theme of American consumption in recent years has been that quantity has declined while quality has gone up, whether that's bread, coffee or pet food.
That's a fascinating idea of consumption".
Two other artists deal in more abstract ways with still-life themes of nourishment, consumption and decay.
She said: "Each film explores common themes of human consumption, destructive obsession and psychological cannibalism – with great humour and humanity".
"Greatly admired by his peers, including [Andy] Warhol and [Joseph] Beuys, Hamilton produced a series of exquisite paintings, drawings, prints and multiples dealing with themes of glamour, consumption, commodity and popular culture," Serota said.
"With Ghost of Consumption, the theme is to encourage people to consider our impact on the oceans," Scala says.
Images of consumption are the theme of the book, "Overdevelopment, Overpopulation, Overshoot". It addresses environmental deterioration through subjects including materialism, consumption, pollution, fossil fuels and carbon footprints.
This theme comprises the following sub-themes: time consumption of home-based programme, complexity and effects of exercises.
