Cerebral arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are easily displayed by conventional MRI and MR angiography because of their characteristic high flow, whereas venous malformations such as cavernomas, developmental venous anomalies and capillary telangiectasias cannot be adequately visualised without contrast medium administration and GE sequences, as they mainly consist of slow-flow small vessels.
