Between 2000 and 2010, the report said, the $10.7 billion ski and snowboarding industry, with centers in 38 states and employing 187,000 people directly or indirectly, lost $1.07 billion in revenue when comparing each state's best snowfall years with its worst snowfall years.
"We have gone through the worst in terms of snowfall, and now we will go about snow removal," Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo said at a news conference in Cheektowaga, N.Y., one of the towns hardest hit by the storms that began on Monday night.
"The confluence of high winds and the snowfall was the worst of all possible scenarios for us," Lester said.
Speaking oflast night's snowfall, Nick Prebble, a forecaster for MeteoGroup, said: "There has been quite a lot of snow overnight, the worst affected areas are northern England down through to the Midlands and towards the south-east, and of course Scotland.
One of the worst affected areas of England is South Yorkshire, where snowfall of up to 30cm (12in) has brought parts of the county to a standstill.
Warren County was affected by the Great Blizzard of 1978 which covered several states and was the worst blizzard on record for Indiana; in late January, a record of snowfall of over 20 inches fell locally, and high winds resulted in snowdrifts as high as 10 feet.
