Aleksandr Butlerov, in full Aleksandr Mikhaylovich Butlerov, (born Sept. 6, 1828, Chistopol, Russia died Aug. 17, 1886, Butlerovka), Russian chemist who helped advance the theory of structure in chemistry, especially with regard to tautomerism, the facile interconvertibility of certain structurally similar compounds.
