That slogan "Peace is patriotic" is an indication of the recent willingness of progressives and liberals to invoke the substantive values of Americanism, like the tradition of liberty and the constitutional sanctity of dissent.
Others argue that legitimacy depends exclusively or at least in part on the substantive values that are realized.
