The latter film's provocative rethinking of the relationship between word and image — one sequence replays the same shots with vastly different commentaries — prompted the critic André Bazin to use the term "an essay documented by film".
The reviewers make the interesting suggestion that there might be sequence replay events during spontaneous period activity.
However, it must be pointed out that if sequence replay events are rare in comparison to spontaneous activity of area CA1 cells, then the correlation analysis described above, coupled with the limited size of our dataset (to minimize calcium indicator dye photo-bleaching) might not have the statistical power to detect them.
From our observations of single runs in Fig. 3, we already derived some anecdotal insight into the mechanisms underlying the breakdown of sequence replay: network activity may cease after a small pattern, whereas large patterns may lead to epilepsy.
The region where sequence replay for homogeneous patterns ( σ ϕ = 0 ) is unfeasible is shown in white for comparison.
Again, these results show that the small patterns are more detrimental for sequence replay than the large patterns, since in the latter case fluctuations can be compensated for by feedback inhibition, whereas the former have no compensatory mechanism.
For example, if a sequence of hippocampal cells responds in different places while an animal runs along a track, then the same sequence is "replayed" in temporally compressed form during rest-related population bursts.

Since we restricted our analysis to replay events occurring while the rat paused at force reward sites, for centrifugal sequence replay away from the animal's location, outbound content reflects forward replay, while inbound content reflects reverse replay.

Here, we acquired simultaneous multi-electrode (tetrode) recordings of neurons of the hippocampus and the VTA as rats performed appetitive spatial tasks and subsequently slept to determine the relationship between VTA neuronal activity, hippocampal SPW-R-associated activity, and sequence replay.
