Ordinarily, adaptation to an oriented target produces a tilt aftereffect (TAE; [ 33]): the perceived orientation of subsequently viewed test stimuli is repulsed away from the adaptor.
This causes an orientation-dependent shift in the perceived orientation of the test stimulus, as illustrated in Figure 1.
A recent paper shows that the perceived orientation of a Necker cube depends on its context in an assemblage of a solid, unambiguous cube complex and interpreted the findings in a Bayesian context [31].
The perceived orientation of these stimuli alternates spontaneously.

Here, the perceived orientation of the test was repelled from the orientation of the adapting flankers rather than from any physical structure at the target location.

For each test orientation, the mean perceived orientation was calculated.
The variation of perceived orientation with gaze angle could reflect a neural gain field effect, but could also be attributable to the direction of approach to the target, - the proximal face being closer to the fovea and therefore enjoy a competitive advantage in representing a visible cube face.
In the vertical axis conditions, perceived orientation was around 90% likely to persist across targets (array condition) while rotation direction persistence was at chance.
