The phrase "the omitted group" is correct and usable in written English.
It refers to a group of words or phrases that is not explicitly stated in a sentence but can be understood from the context. It is used to avoid repetition or to make the sentence more concise. Example: The students were given a test on biology, while the omitted group (was given a test) on chemistry.
The omitted group then became the test set for the reduced model and residuals for the test set were calculated.
